Are you ready to learn to dance with your horse?

Are you ready to learn to dance with your horse?

Formation Riding is a fun and social way to school your horse in company with a group or team of like minded people. Are you ready to learn to dance with your horse?

Formation Riding brings a social aspect to equestrianism as we all know it can feel isolating and lonely at times! We aim to give both horse and rider confidence to ride in a group whilst learning something new in a fun and collaborative environment!

Have a go at formation riding, you will be amazed at what you and your horse are able to achieve!

Formation Riding is for you if:

  • You are fearful of riding in company

  • Get warm up arena nerves or spiciness

  • You or your horse lack confidence

  • You have a green horse and want to add some new experiences

  • Feel you lack motivation or inspiration when schooling your horse

  • Want to meet new people and socialise!

  • Already enjoy riding with others

  • Find yourself over managing your horse & overthinking your riding

  • Want the option to take part in competitions as a group

Formation Riding helps you:

  • Ride in company in a controlled manner - horses and riders get used to being in company in an arena

  • Learn to ride as a team and become aware of the others around you rather than just focussing on yourself

  • School the horses without riders even noticing it is happening due to the movements we ride

  • Be aware of what the others are doing which in turn helps riders to stop over fiddling (their brains are otherwise engaged)

  • The chance to exercise your horse in a controlled social manner and make new friends

  • Riding as a team brings a social element to equestrianism

Learn at one of our Clinics

We offer formation riding clinics for up to eight people. Each clinic is an hour long and are for people who can walk, trot and canter independently although there is no pressure to canter if you’re not feeling it on the day

What to expect during the clinic

After introductions and sorting out the order of horses, the music is put on low and the coach will walk the ride through some moves. Then the coach will move the ride into trot and repeat the moves keeping an eye on the level of energy in the group. It's so satisfying to see the transformation of a new group.

Everyone starts off a little nervous, what’s my horse going to be like in company, I don’t know what to expect, I’ve no idea what the moves are. By the end of the session, they are riding movements together as a team and create something rather magical to watch.

There’s the option of doing some canter work once everyone has relaxed, this can either by alone, in pairs or, for more experienced riders, together as a team which looks awesome. Eight riders cantering around the arena together, just fabulous! The coach will then put a little routine together at the end for the all-important videos.

What will I learn with my horse?

  • Ability to highlight instantly if a horse falls in or out at the shoulder so the rider becomes aware of where their horse’s shoulders are which in turn helps improve accuracy when riding as a team, a dressage test and even lining up a jump.

  • Stopping a horse being able to run through the bridle (strong in the
hand) and not fall on the forehand which helps the horse learn to wait

  • Teaches the horse to sit and use the hind quarters more efficiently

  • Improves stamina of horse and rider so that they can comfortably ride for an hour in a focused manner

  • Brings a social element to riding bringing like minded people together doing something they enjoy

Competitions & Teams

The competitions will run quarterly, in-person at the Grange Equestrian in Devon and online, with new locations to be added for the in-person competitions later in the year. We have leagues for riding clubs and those not attached to a club with categories for under and over 16’s; we’ve even got in hand and lead rein classes so everyone can have a go.

Teams can be from 2 – 8 people and tests are either walk and trot or walk, trot and canter. The next competition is on Sunday July 7th, the day after our Gala Show at the Grange. Tests are available to download from the website so you can all start to get your practice in.

Demonstration Teams

All-Steps have two demonstration teams based in Devon. The teams both include a diverse range of horses and riders ranging from Poppy, a 14.1 Bodmin Pony, up to Dexter, a 16.1 Friesian. Despite the differences in the sizes and breeds of the horses, they all ride together in perfect harmony.

We love having a diverse range of horses in the team as it helps promote how accessible the sport is. At the Horsemanship Showcase last year, one of the audience came up to the team and said how inspired they were to see the Bodmin Pony riding with all the others. She has now signed up to our clinics with her own Cob and living her best formation life.
